How do I keep my animals safe while my daughter volunteers at an animal shelter?
My daughter recently started volunteering at an animal shelter and it got me wondering about the safety of our two dogs. I know the obvious, such as washing her hands and keeping my pets current on vaccinations, but are there any other precautions that need to be taken?
I keep a separate pair of shoes in my garage that I use for shelter volunteer days, to avoid tracking any contagions into my home. I also change my clothes before handling my pets after I come home. As long as your pets are fully vaccinated, risks of them 'catching' anything are small, and most shelters are pretty militant about quarantining animals that show signs of illness immediately and do not allow volunteers in the quarantine area since an epidemic of something would be hard to contain in that sort of environment. I like to take a few extra precautions, but most volunteers don't take any more measures other than hand washing and vaccinating.
Animal Shelter to offer vaccine clinic
The Humane Society of Southern Arizona will offer a Low cost spay/neuter and vaccine clinic to the Douglas community on February 17 and 18 at the Douglas Animal Shelter/Animal Health Care Center, located at 2017 Rogers Avenue.
