wax to bronze sculpture class?
in april, im going to start a wax to bronze sculpture class at a community college. it will be credit class...... anyway.. this will be my first art class taken at a college. i was wondering if i will be paying for the wax, the bronzing material, and all that stuff... or will that be included in the total tuition of the class?
also, can anyone tell me about your experiences in a class like this? wax, bronzing? did you get to make jewelry?
usually there is materials fee in addition to your tuition fee. It varies between different schools how much that is and what that takes care of. As bronze itself is pretty expensive (close to $5/lb right now, and remember, wax weighs about a tenth of what the finished bronze piece will weigh) at every place I have been you had to buy your own bronze. Also because some people may use only a little others a lot.
For the rest it varied what was taken care of and what we had to buy (wax, plaster and sand, some tools for yourself as the school ones can be beat up pretty bad)
What you get to make depends on the equipment available to you. Jewelry is usually done better using either a vacuum caster or centrifugal casting, as this is better for small detail. Usually those foundry classes do gravity casting. I hope you get to do it yourself as I think it's a lot of fun and hot metal looks beautiful. Be careful, it can be addictive...
