CAT Live Chat: Spend equal time in all sections, says expert
With just 39 days left for the CAT 2010 exam to roll, the MBA aspirants are facing tough times vis a vis preparation. To help the aspirants, MBAUniverse.com held the fourth session of the Live Expert Chat on Thursday, 16 September 2010, on the topic of 'Strategy to Crack CAT 2010' with Mr. Gejo Sreenivasan, Principal Consultant, Career Launcher. MBA aspirants from across the country joined the chat to seek answers to their queries on the best preparation strategy and individual approach towards the different sections.
For all those who could not participate in the live chat we bring the important excerpts:
Q: Vishal: What should be the strategy for Verbal Ability section? I have a good vocabulary, and a decent grammar, yet I do get a considerable amount of negative marks in mocks. Please suggest me how to maximize my performance?
A: Look at your Mocks. Make a log of your mistakes. Ensure that the same is not repeated. Spend one hour every day on practice tests of Verbal Ability. It will help in fine tuning your performance.
Q: Sayan: I am a working professional and I have registered myself for CAT 2010. Till now I just went through some study material and took few mock tests where I used to get 60 to 70 percentile. I want to improve my scores. Please suggest!
A: Hi Sayan! Since you have not had a lot of preparation, I suggest one MUST for you. Figure out a way to get the past 20 years CAT papers. Do every one of them thoroughly, all questions and all sections. It will be the best that you can do. Supplement these with the regular Mock Tests and their analysis.
Q: Mohini: What is the best strategy to complete the paper with cool head?
A: Do not entertain any thoughts of the outcome of your performance during the test. Stay focused on the CAT exam and give your best. Some standard tips,
1. Do not get stuck at questions.
2. Fight till the last minute.
3. Keep reviewing your attempts every 15 minutes to keep yourself agile through the test. Remember the simple rule. There will be at least half of the paper that is made of sitters. Do not miss any of them.
Q: Shweta: What is the strategy to crack CAT? Now that it is about 40 days left?
A: Test - Analyze - Review. This is a standard three step process. If you are weak in some areas (which your mock tests point to), spend a little more time there compared to the others. Make sure you have done the CAT papers of the past to get a better perspective of the exam. It serves as a good revision too.
Q: Nandini: What should be my ideal time table for now? How much time shall I devote for each section?
A: Spend equal time in all the sections. If you are fairly poor at Verbal Ability and good at Quantitative Ability, maybe a 50:50 time scheme for Quantitative Ability/Data Interpretation and Verbal Ability would help. I wish there was a standard answer. For Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation, spend as much time as you need for revision.
Q: Chiradip: Can you tell me which books should I read for the social awareness and GK for IRMA and TISS entrance exam? I read newspaper regularly.
A: IRMA has specifics of 'development' oriented questions. So statistics on these issues could be important. As far as TISS is concerned if you are a regular reader of newspaper, it should be enough. You could also refer to some of the magazines that prepare students for the civil services prelims.
Q: Saurabh: I am a bit nervous about my 'Vocabulary Section'. Please suggest me what will be helpful me because only 40 days are left for the CAT 2010 exam.
A: Focus on a couple of types of words, words that you get confused with and standard idioms and Phrases. Do not spend too much time in learning new words now. Take as many practice tests as possible.
Q: Puneet: Quantitative Ability is my weak area. I am doing Arun Sharma and Career Launcher material from start. Many experts are saying that don't learn anything new. So can I manage my QA part now?
A: Aren't you doing too many things? Finish the entire Career Launcher material. Even the funda books are sufficient to push your understanding a lot more. Supplement this with CAT questions from Quant. You can't get better revision than this.
Q: Narayanan: How can I clear my Cut off in Verbal in 25 days?
A: It depends on how far you are from cutoffs today. One hour every day for the next 45 days will help push your scores. Pick the section tests from the material that you are referring to.
Q: Sabya: Please give me some tips for scoring in verbal ability. Sometimes I get confused with options, how to overcome it? And some tips for Quantitative Ability section too.
A: For Quantitative Ability, the least you can do in the next few days is pick Algebra and Geometry and revise thoroughly. Maybe old CAT questions in these topics would be a good supplement. As far as English is concerned, one hour of English for the next 45 days would definitely push your performances better. Always keep a log of the errors, especially grammar. This needs to be looked at before any test.
Q: Mayank: What strategy to be followed while attempting English section, especially for me because I am not a very good reader.
A: Make sure that you attempt all the non RC questions. There is bound to be one or two RCs that would be easy. Make sure you pick it up. Spend not more than 40 minutes on this section if you are not good at it. It would be better for you to invest your time elsewhere.
Q: Lovey: I have bought the CAT voucher but haven't yet registered as I'm confused about choosing the date. What is the ideal date for CAT? Please suggest.
A: My personal opinion is, finish it as early as possible. If you want to wait and see the patterns, may be sometime in the second week of November is good. You have to make the decision based on your preferences. It would not really matter in terms of the percentiles.
Q: Anant: Which is the toughest MBA entrance exam among CAT, XAT, IIFT, FMS, NMAT and JMET? What should be the approach for preparing for all these exams?
A: Personally I think XAT is the toughest of all the MBA entrance exams. It is very much logic oriented. FMS has a lot of focus on Vocab. You need to have some idea of the math that you have done in Class 11th and 12th for JMET. These are the small changes in orientation that you need for different tests.
