What is the best way to introduce another cat/kitten to the cat I have had for about 6 months?
I am a little nervous about how my cat will react to a new friend. My cat is male and he has been fixed and usually has a very laid back attitude. I just want to introduce him to his new friend the right way.
Also, should I get a kitten or a older cat and should it be female or male?
Kitten... kitten kitten....
Definitely get a kitten.. your "resident' cat will adjust to a kitten MUCH more quickly than it will ajust to another adult cat.. And I've NEVER had a problem with them becoming best friends.. I am nervous at so many people telling you to get one similar in age.. in my VAST experience, that's not what's important
I could go into cat psychology and hierarchy, but I won't.. just understand that a KITTEN is MUCH less "intimidating" to an older cat.. It accepts the lower "rung of the ladder" very easily, and this makes it a VERY quick adjustment for the two getting along..
the ONE time we got a new adult cat instead of a kitten, it was ONE YEAR before the cats (new cat and the adult cats we already had) would tolerate each other's presence without a screaming match.. They were displaying seriously territorial behavior..
But with introducing a new KITTEN to an adult, I've always had them playing within 3 weeks, and become best friends.. a kitten doesn't have the sense of "Territory" that an adult has, and therefore isn't a "threat" to the older cats dominance
Okay.. maybe I DID delve into cat psycology and heirarcy more than I intended to.. LOL.. sorry... I was just nervous that so many people were telling you to go same age.. I think they just think it's a good idea..
male/female kitten doesn't matter much, but SOMETIMES a cat will ajust to a kitten of the opposite gender just a TAD quicker.. but doesn't matter much.. if you find a little boy you fall in love with, get him..
Just fix either male/female before they turn 7 months old.. no later..
As for introducing.. first we'll talk about the kitten.. a kitten will be frightened when brought to a new home, but will ajust quickly.. you MAY want to give her 3-7 days ajustment period in her own "space" (say, a laundry room or spare room away from your big boy..) This will give her the opportunity to ajust to her new environment without a lot of hostility from the bigger boy.. and it will give him a chance to get used to the kitten's presence and smell (by him hearing things in that room and smelling through the crack in the door)...
By day 5 for sure you can begin allowing them in the same largish room for periods of supervised time..... allow them to avoid each other or interact as they see fit.. Don't force them into each other's face, but encourage them to stay in the same room... DON'T be freaked out by hissing/spitting/growling, even some slapping.. It will happen and it's totally normal.. and your bigger cat will NOT really harm the little one, even if he gives her a couple bops on the head. He must teach her her boundaries and "who's boss" if they are goign to get along and become good friends..
so.. gradually increase the times they are not separated, and by day 7, kitten should have the run of the house..
The goal is to let THEM work it out.. they will..
and they'll become good friends..
Cats, despite their (undeserved) reputation as loners, do greatly enjoy the company of another cat.. I really think it "adds something" to their life, and prevents boredom..
Usually within 2 weeks maximum, your older cat and younger cat should be fine with each other's presence..
and soon after that, your older cat will probably be playing with the kitten.. .
GOod luck.. email me if you have any further questions..
I've lived with cats my whole life, and gone through this senareo half a dozen times at least... It always works out.. they always become friends.
As long as at least one of them is a KITTEN.. please get a kitten.. an adult will be much more of a gamble as to how it will get along with your other cat...
