French in France
I was late for my first day of French school by 2½ hours, was told so by the School Director and am in my mid 30s. It seems to suggest lack of responsibility but there really is a justifiable explanation. I was travelling to Nice from Milan by train which in took 8 hours and 2 train transfers. I reached my service apartment about 11pm, tired at the end of an enjoyable 2 week holiday in Italy.
I chose to study in Nice because I have travelled to France a few times and always preferred the South. As I have not visited Nice before, it was a good opportunity to explore it. The most indulgent way to learn a language is in the country of origin itself and the successful sale of my house in Singapore afforded me that luxury. The school of choice was determined by internet research, discussions with relevant personnel at local French Associations and economic considerations.
The school is AzurLingua Cote D'Azur, which was a worthy choice. It was well-organized and customer service was a key priority. Organisation in terms of class placement evaluation, quality of teachers, certificate upon course completion and rule to speak only French on school premises enforced through a 1 Euro fine if caught. Not surprisingly, speaking French only was a necessity during class as well.
The teacher for my class was Giovanni Valdarno, a force to be reckoned with. Her commitment to ensuring adherence to the speak French only rule was not to be toyed with. She was a disciplinarian also for completing homework, sentence construction, spelling and vowel conjugation. And trust me, conjugating vowels in French is not an easy task and the tenacity with which she trained her students was almost scary.
Having said that, her commitment to ensuring her students understood the dynamics behind the language was commendable. Giovanni's passion was not just for her students to use French well but to enjoy using it also. She included interesting activities within daily lessons. Case in point would be students understanding and acting out lyrics from French songs played in class (lyrics of course would be family friendly!). Other examples would be paired students acting out to the class scenarios they have been presented with. As participants have to present within minutes of receiving scenarios, it offers them opportunity to speak the language spontaneously and inadvertently commit errors. This presents participants as well as the class the chance to enjoy and learn from their mistakes. While these were fun ways to use French, it also created awareness of the language's applicability.
There were a few drawbacks to consider. One of disadvantages was that the average age of the students in my class was 20s. This created a tendency for them to form little cliques of their own. Additionally as majority of my classmates were from Switzerland and Germany, there was already a pre-existing connection between them. This however, did not present as a major problem for me as I am rather sociable and made good friends within my class and school.
Another benefit for students was the schools commitment to customer service. This was engaged through introductory excursions around Nice, drinks sessions on the first evening at school (which could be perceived as being "so French"!) as well as weekly guided trips in French to Cannes, Monte Carlo and suitable snorkelling sites within Nice. These provided students the opportunity to explore their environment, socialise with their school mates and practice French. Additionally within school premises, there is a scenic courtyard where students can take their breaks while practicing French once again, or speaking alternative preferred language on the sly! After all, the Euros spared could be reserved for typical touristy outings.
Since school lessons were conducted for only half a day, students were provided more than sufficient time to partake in such outings. The school was walking distance to attractions like Vieux Nice, the old town, beautiful churches and museums. Given that AzurLingua was situated along the French Riviera, on days of cultural overdose, we would take leisurely strolls to the beachfront Promenade des Angalis to enjoy the sun on the pebbly beach. Even though the waves were demanding, the water was too inviting to resist.
As I spent most of my free time with female school friends, it was inevitable that there would be shopping trips after school. Avenue Jean Medecin is the main strip which was able to meet all our shopping needs. Even though our group included Singaporean, Peruvian and Columbian women, Avenue Jean Medecin had the extensive range of shops required for a demanding intercontinental crowd. It was also near Place Massena, a lovely public square that allowed us time and comfort to recover from our rendezvous and enjoy a range of performances staged by public entertainers.
The evenings at Nice Central and Vieux Nice were perfect for dinners, drinks, clubbing in general and salsa in particular, of which I am an avid fan and participant. The leisurely evening activities presented students the flexibility to mingle theoretically across continents. Considering that I am a native of South East Asia, I was very appreciative of the reality that evening out were often with a mix of European, South American and other Asian students.
Additionally as AzurLingua was located in the heart of the city, students enjoyed proximity to the train and bus station. This meant private excursion to other Cote D'azur cities such as St Tropez, Antibes and Menton, and beyond to Ventimiglia and San Remo in Italy. These trips particularly within Cote D'Azur enabled us to understand French history, culture and way of life. As days progressed, I was able to continue practicing French in different situations as well greater understanding of the European environment along and beyond the French Riviera.
Upon the completion of my 5 week school term, I continued for 3 weeks on my own exploring the South of France as well as the extent of my newly acquired language skills. I was praised by native French speakers of my language skills and even though the French have a reputation of being arrogant of their nationality, I was duly proud to receive these compliments.
This pride has carried itself across continents and now that I am back in Singapore, I am continuing with French lessons here. Obviously I don't practice as much outside of school but my love for the sound of the language continues. Similarly the close friendships developed in Nice endure even though these friends live in Europe. I will visit Nice hopefully once every year which is a reason to practice French but also an excuse to enjoy South of France and other parts of Europe while visiting my new friends.
So yes, I would recommend AzurLingua Cote D'Azur, not just as an option for learning French but as a pathway for personal development as well. Practically it was a cost effective and engaging manner to learn and use French while enjoying Nice. Personally it was the best way to understand and appreciate the French way of life.
About the Author
On the academic side, I have an honours degree in Sociology and was offered Masters in English Language at the National University of Singapore. Theoretically writing and research are my forte. Practically, as I have worked my way up at research agencies I understand the usage of research as well as writing. On my free time I update my blog which fine-tunes my writing skills and of course travel! I have travelled as far as to Cuba, Central America, to salsa proper and spent 3 months in Europe learning French as well as exploring France and Italy. I'm also quite a keen Asian traveler for work and pleasure. Given that I'm an Asian myself, it presents opportunity to present Asian travel stories from a first han Asian experience. I usually keep updates of my trips on travel journal, my blog and articles. I would like to take this skill and passion further so am keen to explore opportunities at Article Base.
