Naxos Archaeological Museum - Mycenean Collection
Of the gold finds, it seems that the rosettes were used to decorate clothing or shrouds, whilst lions were also for decoration, probably of wooden pyxides. Among the vessels, and. very characteristic of the period, are the 'false-mouthed' amphorae and the water pitchers with sculpted snakes and a lateral 'spoon-shaped, perforated '" spout'. The snakes are indicative of earth-cult offerings (libations poured to the dead). Some of the vessels have simple decoration with undulating or straight bands hooks and spirals. However, a large group of vessels has decoration based on the motif of the octopus, in many varied forms, on most of the body and a part of the shoulder. This is known as the polypodic or dense polypodic style of pottery decoration.
The spaces between the tentacles are decorated with a variety of subjects: free, abstract design, line decoration and plants and animals. In one case there is even a human form and mythical beings, perhaps the earliest form of the Greek Pegasus.
Among the abstract designs the rhombus, the pentagon, the rosette, representing the sea anemone, wheels and spirals predominate. Among the subjects drawn from plants are those suggested by palms, papyrus, ivy, the calyx of flowers, and particularly of the lotus.
The human form is encountered once only, and then as a small supplementary subject on a 'false-mouthed' amphora which has as its principal decoration a large octopus. This is the form of a man, with hands raised, in the shape of the Greek letter psi. The imagery may be depicting a powerful sea demon (Nereus) or a hero traditionally held to have descended to the depths of the sea (Theseus). In the Naxos style, since the creatures in the spaces between the tentacles of the octopus are confined to fishes and sea birds, the decoration suggests the depths of the sea and some mythical tree of the deep.
Naxiot pottery decoration of the Late Mycenean III C phase, that is, from c. 1200 to 1050 BC, has been described as «the style of the ship owners of the island, after the manner of the ,palace style of Agamemnon of Mycenae pottery decoration no palace has so far been found on Naxos. It would seem that the Aegean region, and Naxos in particular, was thriving commercially during this period and was in contact with other centres of maritime trade.
This prosperity is reflected in the finds from the tombs at Aplomata. These seem to have been directed towards the needs of a community which flourished particularly in the years after 1200 BC, and which continued its trends towards Mycenean nature-worship. However, new compositions and new subjects, of Eastern origin in spite of their Mycenean veneer, make their appearance. As a theme for pottery decoration, the octopus design evolved in Crete and subsequently spread through the Aegean, with Rhodes as the central point. Even so, this design is to be found fully developed and with an indisputable local character in Naxos (Late Mycenean Ill C). The Cyclades, especially Naxos, eventually became the centre for its production and distribution.
In the List of Greek islands Naxos stands out since its beaches are among the best Greek Beaches. A Naxos Travel Guide is always useful when you are visiting the island.
