I made a sculpture and thought it best placed outside as this?
added to its meaning. Is this therefore a Site Specific piece of art? Or, does the site...i.e. outside....need to be the main subject of the work. ? Confused.?....I am.
As I understand the term, "site specific," it would mean that the piece relates, closely to the location of the work.
This would be different if the only reason the work is placed OUTSIDE is bacause it, simply, shows off better, or cannot fit indoors.
A large, ornate sundial, for instance, would show much better in an outdoor setting, as the sun's direction would apply to the functionality of the work.
But, a statue of Galileo, in front of an observatory, planetarium or museum of science might be considered "site specific," as his life would be closely associated with the subject of the location. Another example would be the statue of Snoopy in Santa Rosa, California, the home of "Peanuts" creator, Charles Schultz.
I used to be a contributing artist at a studio that produced "site specific" ceramics peices. My contribution would be to design pieces that highlited the client's business or function. There was a local restraunt that had a "flying" theme, with aircraft on display, hanging from the ceiling, parked outside and on photographic display. One, featured airplane was a fully functional Ford Trimotor. I was assigned the task of creating designs and molds for ceramic flower pots and salt and pepper shakers that echoed the lines of the Ford Trimotor.
Not an easy task!
