What to do with a large reproduction hand painted oil canvas that came rolled up?
How am I suppose to hang this on the wall? Without spending a lot of money??
You have a couple of options here. The first is to break down and have it professionally framed. That would cost a lot of money, as you have found out.
The second option is to buy a set of stretcher bars. Measure the painted area (say 16" x 20"), and get two 16" and two 20" wooden bars. Build a stretcher for the canvas. There should be a bunch of excess canvas (unpainted) around the edges.
Place the canvas face down on a flat surface. Then lay the stretcher frame over top. Pull the canvas back over the frame, and staple to the back. This should be excess canvas stapled to the back. Get one staple in each of the top, bottom, and side. Then pull the canvas tightly back, and staple in the back. This mounts the canvas to some wood. (This process works best with a canvas stretcher, which is basically the same tool as a carpet puller.)
After you have the canvas mounted, you can buy a cheap mounting set. This consists of a couple of eye screws which you screw into the wooden stretchers. Then take some wire, tie one end through an eye hook, and then run the wire with a couple inches of slack to the other eye screw. After wiring the stretcher, you can hang it on the wall.
