Lion Park Johannesburg - The very best of South Africa
There are various daily flights from London Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester or Dublin to Johannesburg, South Africa and one departed carrying me. It was kind of a hasty trip. I had to meet the expected CEO of an upcoming airline. However, unfortunately, when I arrived there at nearly seven in the morning and switched on my mobile the first text said "We regret to say the meeting is cancelled due to an emergency". You can't believe how I felt, the cheap flights to Johannesburg were already sold out by the time I booked, the fares were sky high and there I was – after so much struggle and a flight that almost paralyzed my legs, I was standing in Johannesburg with absolutely no where to go. At first I really felt deceived and devastated (though I later found out there was a death in the CEO's immediate family, he had every reason to miss the meeting). I spent a few minutes sitting in the launch, angry and upset. I called my company and they asked to get the first available return ticket and fly back home. There was no point in staying there.
I did as told and asked the lady at the counter for the nearest return flight. She only added to my worries saying it was fully booked; I asked for the next day no seats available, the third…there fortunately was a cheap ticket available that I booked without thinking.
Now I had two nights with nothing to do and a return ticket in my hand. I Google out a cheap accommodation on my lap top, than hired a cab and had a sound sleep until the sun set in west. Late in night I went outside to sit in the bar for a while, there I met James. He was also form London. I told him the meeting cancellation tragedy; he said
When life gives you lemon, make lemonade.
He had his family staying in the hotel and they were planning to visit the Lion Park the next day, I was invited. It sounded good to me.
We left a little late in morning, in sort of a tourist van. James, his wife, their 11 year old son, our guide, driver and a middle age Chinese couple. The Lion's Park Lanseria is situated almost at the borderline between Johannesburg and Pretoria. We spend the time marveling at the beautiful landscape and enjoyed the long drive. By the time we arrived, the sun was up and high already. At the entrance gates, we were handed the broachers that stated Lion Park is home to more than 85 lions. It also included the rare white lions. White lions are like, nearly only 300 left in the whole wide world. They are extinct and endangered and hardly ever you get to see some so up close. I was excited like the kids. Other animals included cheetah, wild dog, hyenas and even antelopes that are indigenous to African continent. The park offers terrific up close views, you must have extra batteries for your cameras though, for there is a lot to capture.
Other than the white lions, what I found most interesting was hand feeding wild animals. There you could hand feed the cubs, hyenas and a trained Giraffe. They had a pair of new born Hyena babies too; I had never seen them so young before. Not even on TV.
All young and old were having a good time interacting with animals of the wild. It was both informative and amazing. I took some photos with a cheetah who just sat there posing like you see only in Tarzan posters. Unbelievable.
Towards the end of the trip we visited the celebrity wall. There were a lot of famous faces on the wall, though I only remember our cricketersJ Lion Park is truly informative, entertaining and adventurous attraction. From the drive, to returning back home and in between – you just enjoy everything. I agree that it's the Best way to start exploring the wonderful South Africa.
