Famous Sculptures Around the World
There is never a dull moment around a sculpture! With its flowing lines and intricate designs, sculptures bring to you life as it appeared to a creator long before many of us were born. People, animals, God and Goddesses are depicted in forms that soothe the eyes and convey emotions like beauty, wrath, pain and love in creative and unimaginable ways.
Famous Sculptures around the World
David by Michelangelo
One of the finest masterpieces the Renaissance ever produced is the sculpture of David. Found in the Accademia Gallery Museum in Florence this sculpture was unveiled in the year 1504. This famous marble sculpture is not made as per the proportions of a human body. Various experts have a theory regarding this which states that this is because when Michelangelo created this sculpture it was supposed to be put on a high pedestal which would then give the appearance of the proportions being correct when viewed from a distance.
The Aphrodite of Cnidus by Praxiteles
Created by Praxiteles of Athens, the sculpture is famous for its beauty and is the first life size representation of a nude female form. As the name suggests this statues depicts the goddess Aphrodite as she gets ready for her ritual bath. This sculpture and its copies are often known as the Venus Pudica type.
The Bird Girl by Sylvia Shaw Judson
Created in the year 1936 this famous sculpture was sculpted in Ragdale. This statue stands 50 inches tall and is cast in bronze. The sculpture of the bird girl is an image of a young girl wearing a simple dress. Her expression is sad and contemplative and her head is slightly tilted to the left. She has her elbows propped against her waist as she holds up two bowls out from the side. This famous sculpture was commissioned as a garden sculpture for a family residing in Massachusetts.
Pietà by Michelangelo
This creative masterpiece was made by Michelangelo when he was just 21 years old. Located inside St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome, this sculpture is one of Mother Mary holding the body of Jesus after the crucifixion. Perfect in every way this sculpture created by this famous sculptor conveys a mixture of emotions, each very difficult to express!
The Kiss by Auguste Rodin
Originally known as the Francesca da Rimini, the Kiss was created in 1889 and depicts a couple locked in an embrace. Surrounded by a lot of controversy this sculpture has a story that suggests the embracing couple is an Italian noblewoman seen with her husband's younger brother. This couple is said to have fallen in love while reading the story of Lancelot and Guinevere. Unfortunately this love story has a tragic ending since they were discovered by Francesca's husband who later killed them.
The Thinker by Auguste Rodin
Another sculpture by the famous sculptor, this piece of art is popular the world over. Originally known as the poet, this creation is said to be that of Dante pondering over a great poem in front of the gates of hell. Finished in the year 1902, the thinker is not one but many statues as Auguste Rodin created more than 20 casts for different museums of the 5 continents.
The Winged Victory of Samothrace
This sculpture is also known as the Nike of Samothrace. Discovered in 1863, this second century BC marble statue of Nike (Greek Goddess) is prominently displayed in the Louvre museum. Despite the fact that this statue is damaged it is one of the most celebrated statues the world over. This beautiful sculpture portrays artful flowing drapery and also conveys feelings of triumph and action. Certainly a must see when traveling the world!
Famous Sculptures in India
One of the first instances of sculpture in the world is the Indus Valley Civilization. In this period the materials used to make sculptures were stone and bronze. As religions such as Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism gained prominence more intricate designs were made as temple carvings. The Ajanta and Ellora Caves is an example of a sculpture that was not made out of blocks but instead carved out of rocks.
The Farnese Bull by Apollonius and Tauriscus
This sculpture was carved out from just a block of marble and belongs to the Farnese collection. This famous sculpture represents the myth of Dirce. It is said that the sons of Antiope, Amphion and Zethus tied Dirce to the wild bull in order to punish her for the way she had treated her mother who was the first wife of Lykos, King of Thebes. This sculpture can be viewed at the Museo Archeologico Nazionale Napoli in Naples.
